Witness to Murder
Barbara Stanwyck plays an interior decorator who witnesses a murder, Rear Window-style, and becomes caught up in a web of anxiety and mortal fear. George Sanders' suave ex-Nazi author-turned-killer (!) has her committed to a mental hospital for her trouble. "Here we have the standard dilemma of many a movie heroine in the fifties: she is isolated, left in a vulnerable limbo in which she cannot escape the threat to her life because no man in authority will believe her." (R. F. Wilson, The Velvet Light Trap Fall '76) "Alton's photography is, as always, evocative-especially in the opening shot of the hot, nocturnal wind blowing the awning of one of those all-too-typical West Los Angeles apartments that frames the figure of Stanwyck rising and walking to the window, only to become a witness to murder." (Silver and Ward, Film Noir)
