Neither sensationalizing nor downplaying the ugliness of prison life, this Iranian feature-winner of the Amnesty International Doen Prize at the Rotterdam Film Festival-portrays two antagonists, a defiant young inmate and a warden who reveals self-confidence seemingly at odds with the Islamic fundamentalist view of women. Both are struggling to survive the dehumanizing chaos of life on the inside, where the inmates include murderers, religious and political nonconformists, and prostitutes. Though the film was heavily censored in Iran, we will be showing the director's preferred version.
