Wreaths at the Foot of the Mountain

As a continuation of our April Tribute to Xie Jin we are now able to present his most recent feature. During his April visit here, Xie unhesitatingly called Wreaths at the Foot of the Mountain his favorite among his films, and this opinion was seconded by critics who saw the film at a San Francisco screening. The leading director of The People's Republic of China, Xie Jin is both a fine visual stylist and a profound humanist whose films depict the role of the average person, and of women in particular, in China's revolutionary struggles. Wreaths at the Foot of the Mountain, released to coincide with the 35th Anniversary of the People's Republic of China, follows the different fates encountered by families of unsung heroes of the revolutionary struggle, men who died in battle on the Vietnamese front. Based on a popular novel, the film version has been praised for its rich character depictions and intensity of emotions.
