The struggle of Tito's partisans against the Nazi invaders during World War II is a pervasive theme in contemporary Yugoslav literature and films. While in part a political imperative, this motif also constitutes a predictable folk epic and morality drama somewhat analogous to the American Western. Good films and bad films, simple-minded films and subtle films, have been made on the partisan theme: Three, by Aleksandr Petrovic, is one of the exceptional “partisan films,” one of the first to go completely against the grain of the socialist realist method in depicting the war period in terms of credible experiences of individuals caught up in calamitous events beyond their control. The title refers to the fact that the film is made up of three separate vignettes.
