The Big Street
In this mixture of guys and dolls, author Damon Runyon makes his bow as producer, offering a “smartly paced and colorful comedy drama” (New York Times) about selfish, glamorous nightclub singer Gloria (Lucille Ball), whose philosophy is “a girl's best friend is a dollar.” She is selflessly loved by Little Pink (Henry Fonda), who takes care of her when she is incurably crippled. He even pushes her wheelchair to Miami so she may meet a millionaire playboy on whom she has designs. Only after he has risked the long arm of the law for her does she realize the extent of his devotion. Runyonesque dialogue and humor are provided by Professor B (“a citizen never loses what he has filed away in his ticker”), Horsethief and Nicely-Nicely Johnson who seem to be having a ball!
