Like so many of the best Warners' programmers, Jimmy the Gent is a bouncy comedy with a racket to expose: this time we find Jimmy Cagney engaged in the “business” of locating missing heirs to intestate legacies. Davis works for him, but leaves him for a reputable competitor (i.e. a crook with political connections) when he won't reform his shady practices. In this early pairing, Davis and Cagney make ideal leads for a love comedy told in slangy dialogue and topical images.
