“In a very loose sense, Britain's own Sunset Boulevard. An unknown film, and a stunning one. Despite the shared credit, it is essentially Asquith's film. Then on the literal threshold of his career, he was soon to establish himself as a major British directorial talent, with some of his most interesting (and least theatrical) films being done at the start of his career. British films of the mid-'20s were quite surprisingly behind the times, and the apparent anachronisms (Sennett-type slapstick being done so late) represent accuracy rather than nostalgia. It's a moving, exciting and ultimately very poignant film that deserves to be far better known than it is.”
