"An almost unknown little Republic thriller, clearly influenced by the Val Lewton horror films of the same period - and almost worthy of comparison with them, except for an unfortunate last-minute sellout. Up until that point, this study of witchcraft in contemporary New England is a fine little film, helped along by some superb photography (Henry Sharp). Director Colmes was otherwise such an infrequent and routine director that his credit here presents something of a dilemma: is this his one masterwork (comparatively speaking) or was there uncredited assistance?" --W.K.
