Sherlock Holmes

“The piecing together of this print of Sherlock Holmes (primarily by Kevin Brownlow) is a story to rival a Holmesian quest in itself, and an achievement quite as spectacular as Brownlow's reconstituted Napoleon - although sadly the film itself does not quite deserve such dedication. Nevertheless, interesting London locations and a quite remarkable cast make it a fascinating curio. It was produced by Sam Goldwyn and starred John Barrymore.... Exquisitely lit photography made the most of the classic Barrymore profile and of his love of the bizarre, as in the scenes where he masquerades - convincingly - as Moriarty, and in one sequence meets him face to face....” --W.K.E.
