"First Love was the film that finally did allow Deanna to grow up. It was much publicized at the time for giving her a first screen kiss - from Robert Stack. Although a good gimmick, it was a rather saddening reminder that Deanna had to grow up, and the film was received with reservations. This was a pity, for in many ways it is perhaps the definitive Durbin vehicle; it holds up beautifully today, and seldom has Durbin had such sumptuous settings and elegant decor." --W.K.
