Le Ciel Est à Vous

Based on an actual event occurring in 1935, this curious French film tells the story of a female pilot who, supported by her husband, a provincial garage-owner, wins the world solo flying record for women. While it is the chef-d'oeuvre of Jean Grémillon (considered by many to be one of the finest French filmmakers of the Thirties and Forties), Le Ciel Est à Vous has remained all but unknown outside of France. Georges Sadoul, in his “Dictionary of Films,” explains: “The fighting in the spring and summer of 1944 disorganized the French cinema and prevented this beautiful film from achieving the success it deserved. Its images have much of the feeling of neorealism but its lack of success prevented it from becoming the seminal film of a French neorealist movement.”
