Caught

One of Ophuls' more obscure American features, Caught is a dark melodrama that masterfully fuses familiar Ophulsian love themes with an astute European's observations on American domestic life in the postwar period, infected by social ambitions and illusions. Barbara Bel Geddes plays a charm school graduate caught between her psychotic millionaire husband (Robert Ryan) and a struggling young ghetto doctor (James Mason). Lee Garmes' camerawork is Wellesian in its unusual angles, deep focus and expressive lighting.
