Flor Sylvestre

With Flor Sylvestre, his third film (made two years before Maria Candelaria), Emilio Fernandez did much toward realizing his dream of “creating a national cinema....with our own actors and our own stories, without having to...tell stories that had nothing to do with our people” (in The Mexican Cinema). The story is set against the class struggle in Mexico which reached a bloody climax with the 1911 overthrow of Porfirio Diaz. Dolores del Rio stars as a peasant girl who falls in love with a landowner's son (Pedro Armendariz). Our print is in Spanish, with a complete English synopsis provided.
