Pioneer filmmakers used camera techniques to make “Trick Films” full of ghosts, devils, moon creatures and objects that suddenly appear, disappear, fly or move in some other mysterious way. Today these fanciful films, which look like a child's idea of fairytales, retain their magic. This program includes several classics of the genre, and many are beautifully colored from hand-tinted prints. Titles are Tit for Tat, Dream of a Rarebit Fiend, The Red Spectre, The Flying House and Conquest of the North Pole. Edwin S. Porter's 1903 The Great Train Robbery, the first western, will also be shown.
