n 1958, Australian actress Coral Browne was in Moscow performing Hamlet with an English theatre company when a backstage encounter with Guy Burgess led to a luncheon date, during which Browne was strangely drawn to the notorious Cold War spy. Out of this true incident, screenwriter Alan Bennett “has fashioned a witty and eloquent discourse on loyalty and the English. Seamless direction by John Schlesinger (who has an eye, as well as an ear, for dialogue) and splendid performances by Alan Bates as Burgess and Coral Browne as herself make what is essentially a two-hander into a funny, sad, surprising and delightful film” (London Film Festival '83).
