Under the Bridge

Where The In-Laws (June 7) provides a candid and revealing look at life in a peasant village in Northern China, Under the Bridge does the same for a contemporary urban community. This film does battle with traditional social prejudices in the story of a single mother who brings her illegitimate son into the Shanghai neighborhood where she has rejoined her father, a victim of the Cultural Revolution. While she sustains the hurts of intolerance, the man who loves her must undergo a severe test of his own feelings. The 1984 film won the best film award from the Ministry of Culture in China.
