Satyajit Ray
Also at 7:30PM
"In the thirty years since the luminously beautiful Pather Panchali, Satyajit Ray has confirmed himself as India's foremost filmmaker, and
auteur whose best work is graced with flowing, almost musical pacing, images unshakeable in their poignancy, and a vision of unbending humanism. Shyam Benegal, a young director noted for the lushness of his films, bases his tribute to the master on interviews conducted in Bombay and at Ray's home in Calcutta. Overlaying much of the illuminating talk are extracts from Charulata, Aparajito, The Chess Players, and other classics. Ray is also seen at work, on the set of his most recent film, The Home and the World. The conversation explores Ray's influences and his world view, delving into such diverse and fascinating subjects as the Indian writer Rabindramath Tagore, American
directors John Ford, Frank Capra and Billy Wilder, the use of the zoom lens, commercial Indian cinema, Hollywood musician Ravi Shakar, advertising, ambient sound...the list goes on. It all adds up to a rare,
revealing portrait of one of the world's great directors."--Jeff Wagner
Govind Nihalani ("India's finest cinematographer"--Elliott Stein, Film Comment) has also directed several films including Aakrosh (Cry of the Wounded), which was featured along with Shyam Benegal's Manthan
(The Churning) and Bhumika (The Role) in the retrospective Film India:
The New Generation, presented at PFA in November 1982.
