Godzilla Meets Mona Lisa
"'Godzilla'--one of the best known movie monsters (sensitive, but a monster nonetheless)--is filmmaker Ralph Arlyck's nickname for Paris' contemporary art complex, the Pompidou Center (Beaubourg). Like Godzilla, the Pompidou 'monster' has generated mixed feelings--supporters are enthusiastic about Pontus Hulten's outwardly directed museum, while detractors are more comfortable with the inwardly directed Louvre, home of the Mona Lisa. Through witty commentary and interviews with David Hockney, Pierre Boulez, Mme. Pompidou, tourists and others, Arlyck explores contemporary attitudes towards art museums, while adding fuel to the ongoing debate over the respective value of high art versus popular culture. His venture into the Paris art world, curiously described in Variety as 'the rare documentary that lives up to its title,' has won six festival awards." Kathy Geritz
