A Woman from the Provinces (Kobieta z prowincji)
This is an exceptional work capturing the poetry of the everyday and the grace of one rather unexceptional life. A woman of 60, Andzia, recalls her life-her obedient girlhood, her marriage to the equally unpretentious Szczepan and the comic embarrassment of their wedding night, the sudden shock of widowhood as the mother of two young children. "Ewa Dalkowska as Andzia gives an extraordinary performance in which simple facial expressions and gestures get the essentials across without unrealistic embellishment. Sets, costumes, photography, lighting and actors in supporting roles all contribute to this human comedy" (Ron Holloway, Variety). "I was born and brought up in a small town, exactly like the one in which the film's heroine lives," film director Andrzej Baranski writes. "I knew many women like Andzia and I know how they pass their days.... Her prototype still exists today.... It is with her words, and with her individuality intact, that this story of one simple life has been told." A Woman from the Provinces was for many a highlight of the Berlin Film Festival, having debuted at the Gdansk Festival to critical acclaim.
