Luciano Serra Pilota
This film is a paean to the Italian Air Force, produced by Il Duce's son, Vittorio Mussolini. After World War I, Luciano Serra, a pilot, (played with heroic flourishes by Amadeo Nazzari), finds that life offers no exhiliration without the high flying of combat. Seeking work that will keep him airborne, he drifts about Europe, but his adventurous spirit will not be quenched. Finally, he takes off on a transatlantic flight and disappears. Meanwhile, his son, Aldo, has donned the pilot's wings and winds up in the Abysinnian War. Goffredo Alessandrini directed a number of patriotic, highly successful films during the Fascist era and Luciano Serra Pilota is no exception, being the winner of the Mussolini Cup Award at the Venice Film Festival. Amadeo Nazzari's hero is very much in the American spirit, a tough-minded, devilish adventurer. There's no surprise here; Alessandrini knew American film intimately, having spent time in Hollywood as a supervisor for Italian versions of MGM films.
