In the Name of God (En Nombre de Dios)
"Patricio Guzman is best known for his monumental film The Battle of Chile. Forced into exile after the fall of Allende...Guzman's concerns have always taken him back to his birthplace. In his latest film, Guzman investigates the role of the Catholic Church in modern-day Chile. Interviews with priests and bishops, where they frankly talk out against the regime and describe the realities of living in Chile, are placed next to spectacular footage of street demonstrations and riots, brutally suppressed by the police and the army, often using the notorious water cannons mounted on the tops of armoured vehicles. More importantly, Guzman traces the work of the Vicariate, a church organization devoted to defending human rights, and the attempts by the regime to disrupt its work. But, the film is at its most effective when it is talking to some of the priests whose ideas and theology have undergone significant changes through contact with the common people who populate their parishes. However, always in the background is the army, trained in reality to be an anti-terrorist organization. They also evoke the name of God in their rituals. Guzman treads a masterful line between the two polarities which divide Chile, while we are never for an instant confused as to where his sympathies lie."
