Santa Marta: Two Weeks in a Slum (Santa Marta: Duas Semenas no Morro)

In the favelas, the slums on the hillsides surrounding Rio de Janeiro, people live in corrugated iron homes and walk to the center of the city each day in search of work, be it washing dishes or begging. But the people of the Santa Marta district to whom Eduardo Coutinho talks are proud of their neighborhood; they think it's the best in Rio. Among the rats and the rubbish is a tightly-knit community...with one of the most famous views in the world, the beaches of Rio and Sugarloaf Mountain. Eduardo Coutinho directed the impressive 1984 documentary Twenty Years Later (PFA '86).
