Blow for Blow (Coup pour Coup)

Blow for Blow tells a tale not often told on film: that of women workers faced with bad pay, bad working conditions, authoritarian and callous management, an ineffective union, and the usual juggling act at home. An escalating series of provocations, culminating in two of the workers being fired, convinces the women to occupy the plant. Through this experience they learn much about themselves, each other, and their collective strength. This engrossing fictionalized documentary, based on an actual strike by women textile workers in Rouen, is an extraordinary experiment in collective filmmaking that cuts across class lines. Marin Karmitz coordinated, produced, and functioned as one of 100 filmmakers, actors and unemployed garment workers who created the film, each having an equal say in its final shape.
