The Exquisite Hour
Phil Solomon often works with an optical printer, rephotographing images, wonderfully transforming them so that their very surface takes on mysterious, painterly textures. His films seem to speak to and of our emotions, moving beyond a clarity of appearances into the depths of the psyche. His newest film, a companion piece to his hauntingly beautiful Remains to Be Seen, refers to a poem by Paul Verlaine. "...Partly a lullaby for the dying, partly a lament of the death of cinema...(it) is dedicated to the memory of my grandparents, Albert Solomon, who was a projectionist for Fox, and Rose Solomon, who took tickets at Lowe's Paradise, Grand Concourse, in the Bronx" (Phil Solomon).
