The Ties That Bind

: In The Ties That Bind, Su Friedrich's mother describes her experiences in Germany, before, during and after the Second World War. Friedrich writes, "As an 'experimental documentary', the film does not attempt to be 'objective'; instead, it presents and analyzes historical information while it acknowledges the personal, or 'subjective' relationship between the filmmaker and the story-teller. The intention was to present the life of an 'ordinary' woman living through extraordinary times-not in order to make her a hero, but to investigate how fascism and war affected daily life...how and why the average person either resisted or complied with the fascists."
