The Philosopher (Der Philosoph)
There once was a hermit named Hermes...So might begin this fairytale for reclusive intellectuals. At age thirty, Georg Hermes (Johannes Herrschmann), having previously written a Ph.D. thesis on a fragment by Heraclitus, uses the occasion of the publication of his first book (modestly titled The Love of Wisdom: An Introduction to Thought) to emerge from the dark of his one-room apartment. Needless to say, the light of modern times is blinding, and when Hermes determines to buy himself a new wardrobe, disaster looms. A true visitor from another planet, he is rescued by three shopkeepers, Franziska, Beate and Martha, who take a liking to the shy savant and strike up a friendship. Falling (literally, being rather clumsy) in love with Franziska (Adriana Altaras), before long Hermes finds himself entwined with all three women and enthroned in their loft overlooking the river Spree. As we said, it's a fairytale-one which makes no claims to be other than the male fantasy it is, yet with a Rohmeresque charm and appeal that derive from the wit of its script versus the utter innocence of its dubious hero.
