The Long, Long Trailer
"The Long, Long Trailer features Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz in a dark honeymoon comedy cheerfully staged in a bright yellow mobile home. Minnelli, in a Sirkian spirit, has removed the canned laughter and silliness from their more widely known television relationship and given us the raw horror and neurosis of this strange young couple within many very funny situations. Such questions as `Does Lucy even know Desi exists?' begin to crackle the exquisite reality where graceful camera movement, decor, wardrobe, and a lively and vital balance of emotional gestures illuminate the screen." (Nathaniel Dorsky, filmmaker and critic). It's not surprising that the film was a favorite of the Independent Group, for in it Lucy turns the suburban dream into a moveable feast. Minnelli, whom Dorsky calls "a cinema-sculptor: tableau, color and detail of surface are his love," is ideally suited to filming "the drama of possessions" of which Lawrence Alloway wrote. But laden with all manner of creature comforts, the trailer tilts dangerously toward the abyss.
