Alternative Requirements: Recent Films from Bay Area Film Programs
Guest Curator: Lissa Gibbs For many young artists the choice to study and make films in the Bay Area is a deliberate one. Unlike many other film programs, those available in the Bay Area offer students the unique integration of a longstanding alternative art community with the cultural breadth and variety of everyday life found throughout the Bay Area. Tonight's program features work from the San Francisco Art Institute, San Francisco State University, Stanford's Graduate School of Communication, the New College, UC Berkeley, DeAnza College, and California College of Arts and Crafts. ...And if not now when... by Alan Mukamal (1990-91, 17 mins, B&W/Color), a reflection on Martin Buber's I and Thou. ...like water into sand by Susanne Fairfax (1991, 8 mins, B&W/Color), a series of visually elliptic responses to a suicide. Hanabi by Tomoko Tsuruta (1990, 5 mins, Color), an animated moment in the filmmaker's life which seems like an eternity. A Monumental Landscape by Marina McDougall (1989, 5 mins, Color), which "examines landscape as the expression of human will." Marecage by Rupert Jenkins (1990, 7.5 mins, B&W, 8mm), which "evokes the vicissitudes of time, travel and climate." I Saw It In Your Words by Gillian Barnes (1991, 8 mins, B&W), "an interpretation of folklore about the supernatural." A Constant State of Departure by Lidia Szajko (1989, 11 mins, B&W), which "melds the past and present into the place that we call memory." Untitled by Thomas Korschil (1990, 8 mins, Silent, B&W), "an optical print of movement of light and dark." Celebrights by Al Hernandez (1990, 10 mins, Color, Super-8mm), "a film mainly about wiggling and the beauty of it." Echo Anthem by Mark Street (1991, 8 mins, Color), which "attempts to uncover the underbelly of jingoism in 1991 America." Condemnation by Kevin Deal (1989, 6 mins, Color), an exploration of personal and social alienation in our media-dominated society.--Lissa Gibbs
