Imagine and Short Films
“By 1971, the Lennons' every public appearance seemed to demand a statement on the Vietnam War or other social issues. They therefore welcomed the opportunity to shed this seriousness and make a happy and intimate film about their relationship, set to music. Imagine (Yoko Ono, John Lennon, 1971, 70 mins, Color), shot for television in the summer and fall of 1971 in England and the United States, (and not to be confused with a more recent release of the same title), was edited to the tracks of Lennon's just-completed Imagine and Ono's Fly albums; it is one of the most important precursors of the modern music video. Playful in tone, the film reveals the humor and affection that characterized Ono and Lennon's friendship.” (Tom Smith, AFA) Ten for Two: Sisters, O Sisters (1972, 4 mins, Color): This segment from a feature-length documentary features Yoko Ono's performance at the John Sinclair Freedom Rally (the leader of the Rainbow People's Party had received ten years for possession of two joints). Walking on Thin Ice (1981, 6 mins, Color), Woman (1981, 3.5 mins, Color) and Goodbye Sadness (1982, 2.5 mins, Color): These films, from videotapes made by Yoko Ono after John Lennon's death, and meant to accompany selections from the album Double Fantasy, combine home-movie footage of the Lennons with new material of Ono living alone in New York, to evoke a powerful feeling of loss.
