The Mountaincat

Archival Prints! Bruce Loeb on Piano (Die Bergkatze). In Lubitsch's hilarious antimilitarist satire, Pola Negri plays Rischka, a "wildcat" in love with the handsome-and popular-Lieutenant Alexis. (As he passes through the town, lots of different children cry "Papa!") Sets and costumes by Ernst Stern are a fascinating blend of Expressionism and late "Jugendstil." The film takes on surrealist aspects in a dream sequence in which Alexis literally gives his heart to Rischka, and when they are seen dancing to the accompaniment of an orchestra of snowmen.
