Pigskin Parade
"Unsure what to do with a young artist on their books bythe name of Judy Garland, MGM loaned her out to 20th Century-Fox forPigskin Parade. It was her first feature film and in it she receivedninth billing....She had three songs (which) she delivered charmingly asa freckle-faced pig-tailed hillbilly by the name of Sairy Dodd....Thestory concerned a hillbilly football team from Texas who, by mistake, are invited to play against Yale in New Haven. Stuart Erwin was theteam's country bumpkin quarterback whose penchant for sendingwatermelons sailing over the field had made him a localcelebrity..." (C. Hirschhorn, The Hollywood Musical). "PigskinParade moves down the entertainment field with gusto and éclat, emerging as a genuinely funny burlesque of football and its musicalcomedy concomitants....We don't say that Pigskin Parade deserves a Nobelprize or anything so solid, but it is good fun and almost everyone butthe Yalies should like it." (New York Times, 1936) Incidentally,The Yacht Club Boys sing their own compositions.
