I Was a Teenage Werewolf

I Was a Teenage Werewolf is a low-rent Rebel Without a Cause in which efforts to make a recalcitrant teen adjust go slightly awry when he is put under the care of a mad-scientist shrink. From hokey Halloween wholesomeness to a Transylvanian janitor who spots the tell-tale signs of the teenage werewolf-perhaps it had to happen, but this AIP film makes the merging of teen-flick and horror film seem like a natural thing. "Adjust to what?" Tony (young Michael Landon) queries, as well he might: the nuclear-family scenes are a fright. His school principal leers sincerely, "I always knew if we could really get inside you..." And the cop who suggests he smile more will live to regret Tony's toothy grin, for sure. Perhaps not a nightmare at all, but an adolescent's dream.
