Even before The Mad Doctor, a 1933 Mickey Mouse cartoon considered so frightening that many theaters refused to show it, Disney concocted gruesome death-chamber scenes in Alice's Mysterious Mystery and a brutal kidnapping in Alice Chops the Suey that became milestones in cartoon frightfulness.
