Edge City

Straddling the borders of urban and suburban, Edge City dishes out the kind of unnervingly true-to-life performances that make this teen drama feel more like a depraved slacker documentary. Eugene Martin's handheld camera gives a sneakily voyeuristic view of the everyday extracurricular exploits of kids from both sides of the Philadelphia tracks. Whether they live in rowhouses or mansions, drugs, sex, alcohol, loud music, and reckless driving fill their summer days and nights. Responsibility is a value learned with explosive force and tragic consequences. Driven by a rhythmic sound track infused with hip-hop, rap, and dance music, Martin's cinematic language is as authentic and affecting as his characters. Shown with Lick the Star (Sofia Coppola, U.S., 1998, 13 mins): The Queen of the 7th Grade may be riding for a fall.
