Summer in Madrid. While the noontime news documents the exodus of seashore-bound vacationers, Javi, Manu, and Rai are stuck in the city. The three teens prowl Madrid's outskirts by night, searching for thrills-rap music, alcohol, the hollow promises of cardboard cutouts in travel agency windows-anything to mitigate their daily reality of boredom, broken homes, and unemployment. Fernando León de Aranoa's second film is remarkable for his perfect ear for cadences of teenage frustration as well as for the forceful, fluid performances of his three young stars. Without moralizing, he sets out the few choices these youngsters have-and the decisions they are forced to make.-Jennie Yabroff
