Jungle Emperor Leo 3
Recommended for ages 11+. A loose remake of Osamu Tezuka's mid-'60s TV series (renamed Kimba the White Lion in the U.S.), this exemplar of Japanese anime continues the story of Leo the white lion who must now protect the jungle from an invasion of greedy humans seeking a magical stone. Meanwhile, his son Lune has become so enchanted by humans that he is captured and sold to a circus. Tezuka's series may have inspired The Lion King (just as Tezuka was influenced by Disney); but the action and excitement here are uniquely anime. Also recommended for teens-our June 4 Tezuka short-film extravaganza. (See p. 17.)
