Robinson in Space

Preceded by short:Yellow (Simon Beaufroy, Bille Eltringham, 1996). A sharply observed snapshot of the uneasy balance of power on a country road trip. Codirector Beaufroy is the writer of The Full Monty. (12 mins, Color, 35mm)In this follow-up to his idiosyncratic 1994 essay London, Patrick Keiller offers a tour of England that probes into literary nooks and political crannies, the places where capitalism meets local color, and history keeps its secrets. Paul Scofield gives a wonderfully literate reading of Keiller's narration. Keiller's alter-ego, Robinson, a modern-day Crusoe, is a Marxist materialist whose passion for "authenticity of appearance" at times plays out in a curious nostalgia for the industrial revolution. This same curiosity uncovers England's greatest authors and infamous individuals as people of their place and time. And You Are There. (JB)
