Liebe Perla
At the heart of Liebe Perla is the friendship between two remarkable short women: Hannelore, a German researcher born after World War II; and Perla, the only surviving member of the Lilliput Troupe, a successful family of Jewish dwarf actor-musicians whose performing career took a horrifying turn in 1944, when they were forced to pose naked for a "scientific" film directed by Dr. Josef Mengele at Auschwitz. Hannelore's search for the missing footage of Perla's family reveals some unsettling insights into the status and struggles of disabled people, in the Nazi era and now. Meanwhile, Perla insists, "I don't consider what people think of us. Consider that a diamond is also small but precious"-an apt description of the sparkling and enduring Perla.-Juliet Clark (53 mins, Video, From Cinephil)Preceded by short:
