Molly O'
Features preceded by cartoon shorts: Max Fleisher's Koko's Earth Control (1928) and Walter Lanz's Homeless Homer with Oswald Rabbit (1928). Both silent with piano accompaniment by Jon Mirsalis. See cartoon program, March 30.Reviewing UCLA's restored print of Molly O' when it was shown at Cinecon, Jon Mirsalis wrote: "A variation on the Cinderella story, with Mabel Normand playing the poor Irish girl who goes to the ball and catches herself a rich prince charming. A fun picture, and Mabel is at her most charming, though just when you think The End title is about to come up, the plot shifts gears and it goes on for another two reels with a kidnap sequence in a Zeppelin! Very strange." Of silent comic Mabel Normand's many unseen feature films (only seven of twenty-three remain), this has been the most sought-after. Next to Mickey (1918), it was the most acclaimed of her films, reuniting her with producer Mack Sennett. Although Molly O' was meant as a comeback vehicle for Normand, unfortunate events surrounding its release-the Fatty Arbuckle scandal and then the William Desmond Taylor murderonly hastened her career's downward turn.Preserved through Saving the Silents, a National Endowment for the Arts Millennium Project, organized by the National Film Preservation Foundation.
