The Big Animal
When a camel turns up in the Sawickis' front yard, an entire Polish town loses its senses. Perhaps gripped by the delirium of the new capitalism, Mr. Sawicki's acquaintances propose moneymaking schemes like casting the beast in a television commercial. But the unassuming bank clerk (wonderful walrus-mustached actor/director Jerzy Stuhr) refuses to exploit the genial giant, and that's when the trouble starts. Suspicion, rumors, and lies swirl through town. This irresistible fable of small-town prejudice recalls the gentle 1960s satires of Jirí Menzel and Milos Forman. Stuhr directs from a characteristically unsentimental script written by his late friend and collaborator, Krzysztof Kieslowski. With short: Pharoah (Sergei Ovcharov, Russia, 2000, 10 mins): Ancient Egyptian frescoes come to life in this inventive animated film.
