Constructing Identities

Artists in Person

This collection of films and videos explores the ways individuals are shaped, especially by family and the modern urban environment. The compelling narratives of Myra and First Days return us to the formative years of childhood to relive hard-earned lessons of home and school. A Great Deal! is a sharp and quirky film about barriers erected to guard personal space. Women construct and deconstruct their identities through art and culture in the colorful sound collage Soundtrack to a(n) (R)Evolution and the visually poetic constructions. Sidewalk Story, a vibrant montage of street graffiti, and the poignant Alexia look at hidden meanings and the inability of words to tell our whole stories. Tonight's program also celebrates women's assertion of personal and cultural identity through their bodies with A Longer Journey and the deftly crafted documentary Hair Stories.
