Film Ist 1-6

"The cinema is an eye wide open on life, an eye more powerful than our own and which sees things we cannot see."-Germaine Dulac

Gustav Deutsch's Film Ist 1–6 is compiled entirely from scientific films, which often are not considered to be part of cinema's history, yet, as shown here, are both aesthetically compelling and technically innovative. Deutsch's subtle editing between excerpts reveals an unexpected poetry and lyricism and recalls the sense of wonder that cinema's first images - experiments with motion-engendered. Through extreme slow and fast motion, as well as micro– and telescopic cinematography, the motion of plants, the cycle of the sun, the movement of microbes, and the gait of animals are revealed, the invisible miraculously made visible. Deutsch's Film Ist 7–12 will be presented on May 28.
