(Povinnost). This poetic diary or "confession" of a ship's captain is one of Sokurov's most majestic and troubling achievements. Structured in five episodes, Confession parallels the outer journey of the ship with the inner voyage of the captain, the destiny of Russia with his individual fate. Confession is a work both of introspection, based as it is on the captain's interior monologue, and of materialist objectivity. The first two episodes meticulously describe the everyday duties and routines aboard a ship that patrols the Arctic Sea. The final three episodes become increasingly abstract, subjective, and allusively political. Confession seems as if Frederick Wiseman and Herman Melville were cohorts, the minute details of institutional regimentation compressed beneath the weight of existential trials. As Donato Totaro has pointed out, Confession accords with the theme of Sokurov's greatest works: the effect of extended isolation on the human soul and psyche. Formally rigorous, full of astonishing imagery, the videowork miraculously transforms documentary detail into metaphysical lyricism.
