(La Traversée de Paris). A tragicomic sketch of distinctly unheroic lives and struggles during the Nazi occupation of France, Four Bags Full details the adventures of a couple of black–market messengers in wartime Paris. Gabin portrays a successful artist who is accidentally caught up in the sordid business and follows through out of cynical curiosity. Director Claude Autant–Lara wrote that his intention in this film was to "focus the attention of wide audiences on all of the horror, the absurdity and the futility" of the Nazi occupation, and to stimulate "a laughter that is sarcastic, vengeful, and-yes-condemnatory."
