His Grace's Will

Although Sjöström played comic roles to great acclaim in films directed by others, His Grace's Will stands as the only surviving comedy directed by Sjöström. This film also is the first collaboration between Sjöström and author Hjalmar Bergman. Bergman, known for his sharp wit, was one of the few high-profile Swedish writers of the period who wrote specifically for film; he eventually joined Sjöström in Hollywood in the 1920s. Here, heirless Baron Roger Gustaf Adolf Abraham Bernhusen de Sars decides to celebrate his sixty-fifth birthday by rewriting his will, much to the chagrin of his overly anxious sister and her sons. But there are a few surprises his Grace has failed to consider. This comic detour in Sjöström's oeuvre not only gave him a break from the somber themes of adultery, infanticide, poverty, and murder but also provided the opportunity to playfully experiment with his own cinematic language.
