Black Sunday
John Frankenheimer Black September in January? John Frankenheimer, known for heady thrillers like The Manchurian Candidate and Seven Days in May, ratchets up the action in this terrorist tract that hinges on a big bag of wind-the Goodyear blimp. Bruce Dern, completely unhinged as Lander, a former Vietnam P.O.W. and dirigible pilot, is recruited by Palestinian terrorists to blow Super Bowl Sunday all the way to Thursday. In hot pursuit are Kabakov (Robert Shaw), a Mossad operative whose world-weariness allows him to see the bitter rationale of both sides, and his cool Company companion, FBI agent Corley (Fritz Weaver). At the explosive core is Dahlia (Marthe Keller), a Palestinian radical, embittered by the brutality of the refugee camps. Between Lander's spittle-spraying madman and the black Dahlia's chilling hatred, Black Sunday courses inexorably towards its target. A weapon with 220,000 lancets aimed at 80,000 football fans-could be overkill.
