Tangsir
Generally held by progressive Iranians as the most “revolutionary” film produced in Iran, Tangsir codes its incendiary contemporary message in a story set fifty years ago. Critic Michael Webb has written: “A powerful, sombre historical drama of injustice and revenge, strikingly shot and acted. Its setting is Tangestan on the Persian Gulf where, fifty years ago, a poor man who was cheated of his savings by rich merchants takes bloody revenge and escapes. The film's contemporary relevance is played up by the use of deliberate anachronisms - oil tankers and tennis - juxtaposed with tribal customs and thatched huts. Fine production values enhance an excellent performance by Iran's leading star, sustained drama and authentic folklore.”
