The Eclipse (L'Eclisse)

The final film in Antonioni's trilogy that includes L'Avventura and La Notte again deals with personal relationships in modern society, and the nature of solitude as man's accustomed state. Vittoria (Monica Vitti) breaks off her affair with Riccardo (Francisco Rabal), and shortly after drifts into another affair with her mother's handsome young stockbroker, Pierre (Alain Delon). The film ends with a classic 7-minute montage of shots of the area where Vittoria and Pierre met, passing from late afternoon to night, in which neither of the characters appears: the last word on the once-fashionable themes of “the failure to communicate,” and “existential alienation.”
