Coming of Age: African Shorts

This compilation of three short works follows two headstrong young women-and a pair of luckless friends-as they navigate the difficulties of coming of age both in and out of Africa. In Bronx Princess, the beautiful and proud Ghanaian American Rocky has just graduated with honors from her Bronx high school, while helping her mother run a beauty-supply store. A trip home to see her father in Ghana, however, finds even the gregarious Rocky tongue-tied (though not as tongue-tied as her father would like!). Meanwhile, in Kenya, a young girl's life develops alongside Kenyan democracy with its strains and strengths, from the naïveté of post-independence to oppression and possible freedom, in Judy Kibinge's impressive Coming of Age. The familiar “one last job before going straight” crime story is given a jolting Nigerian twist in the riveting Area Boys, by award-winning director Omelihu Nwanguma, whose short Seeker just won a distribution deal with HBO.
