“A fatalistic thriller about a respectable little store cashier (Edward G. Robinson) who becomes infatuated with and eventually murders a whore (Joan Bennett) and then allows her pimp boyfriend (Dan Duryea) to be executed for the crime. One of Lang's bleakest works, impressively played and enhanced considerably by Milton Krasker's superior lensing of rain-filled Manhattan streets at night. Based on the play ‘La Chienne,' filmed in 1931 in France by Jean Renoir.” --R.A.E.P.
